Barry Laverty, a new medical school graduate, accepts a position as an assistant doctor to an older, well-seasoned, country doctor in the town of Ballybucklebo in Northern Ireland. The older doctor uses unorthodox methods with his eccentric patients, but has a heart of gold. The quaint town, quirky characters, and medical emergencies tell the story of a 1960's small village with all of its problems.
Some of the situations are laugh-out-loud funny. Some are strange, but everything works out great. There are no surprises in the ending, no strange twists or bizarre plots, and that suited me just fine.

I'm glad to see you enjoyed it. I listened to a little bit more of it today and just love the accent and characters. Fun.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear the accents! Especially Kinky's accent. I love how she says "so" at the end of all her sentences.
DeleteSometimes this is just the sort of book that we need. I mean after that Feminine Mystique... ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou know it.
DeleteI just listened to the part where Barry sees The Feminine Mystique on Patricia's bookshelf--what a funny coincidence! :)
DeleteLaugh-out-loud funny sounds really good to me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for following my blog, Willa. I'm going to hop over to yours. Sometimes you need a quirky character to put a smile on your face.

DeleteI just reread my comment. HA! I meant a quirky character in the book! :)
DeleteIt sounds like a fun book and reminds me of the All Creature Great and Small books by James Herriot, except with people, not animals.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is kind of like that except with strong language. The doctor was a sailor in his younger life. The people are funny.
